This is Douglas Hollow Schoolhouse sitting alone in the hills south of the Dalles, Oregon. It most likely supported the communities of The Dalles and Dufur, Oregon. The white peak in the background.

Douglas Hollow School was almost lost to the Dalles Substation Fire in 2018. I had been filming with the crew at OPB for an episode of Oregon Field Guide in June of that year. Three weeks later the abandoned farmhouse we were shooting was lost to the fire, and I made a frantic two-hour drive back from Portland to Wasco County..

The Douglas Hollow Schoolhouse is a historic one-room schoolhouse in Wasco County, surrounded by farmland. It was most likely used to help the youngsters of the rural communities in the area of Dufur and The Dalles. This site was nearly destroyed by the Dalles Substation Fire in 2018. However, it is currently undisturbed and in excellent shape.

Also in Deer Island on Hwy 30 the Deer Island school which was originally a 1 room school house is still there although it was added onto at some point and expanded into a multi-room schoolhouse. The original 1 room house though is still visible and distinct. My grandmother taught music there when it was still a 1 room schoolhouse in the early.

A Photographer's Journey Capturing Old Schoolhouses of Oregon History

The Doulas Hollow School is located on Wrentham Cutoff road which is a compacted gravel road. The school may actually be located in Emerson.. not clear from the map I have. A County map will DEFINITELY be a big help here! Wrentham Cutoff Road is about 8 miles long. The school is at the very top of a rise with a spectacular two mountan view.

The old Douglas Hollow Schoolhouse in The Dalles, Ore., is a great locale for photography. Photo courtesy Heather Tianen In one image, there is a big white streak, called STEVE. That's short for Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement, and it is not, technically, part of the Aurora, or Northern Lights. Just as beautiful, though, Tianen said.

Boyd was founded in 1870 on the banks of Fifteen Mile Creek and named for a local miller called T.P. Boyd. The remnants of his 1883 wooden granary still tower above the creek. Visit on a late fall day and listen to the gurgle of the water and song of hidden birds among the cottonwoods trees.
